A 7-day immersive painting week for beginners and returning artists

A 7-day immersive painting week for beginners and returning artists

A 7-day immersive painting week for beginners and returning artists

Step into early summer at Château de Puy Vidal, where roses spill along garden paths and golden evenings stretch long into the countryside. This 7-night Impressionist oil painting retreat invites you to explore still life, interiors, and plein air painting through the study of light, color harmony, and atmosphere — guided by artist Lizzie Black inside the château’s historic rooms and gardens.

Designed for beginners and returning painters, this week blends structured, accessible instruction with spacious studio time. You’ll learn how to simplify form, mix luminous color relationships, and develop loose, expressive brushwork inspired by Impressionist principles — without critique-heavy academic pressure.

Throughout the week, you’ll explore:

• Painting light and atmosphere in an Impressionist style
• Still life and interior compositions inside the château
• Plein air sessions in the gardens and surrounding countryside
• Color harmony and expressive, responsive brushwork
• Optional one-on-one guidance from Lizzie

Each day unfolds at an unhurried pace — generous French meals, focused studio hours, conversation in the garden, and evenings under the stars. By the end of the retreat, you’ll leave with a stronger understanding of light, color relationships, and confident, expressive brushwork — along with renewed trust in your creative voice.

Applications are now open. Limited places available.

Artist's Letter

Royal Associate member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Lizzie Black lives and works in the picturesque village of Mousehole, West Cornwall, where she embraces the experience of painting en plein air, responding to the ever-changing light and beauty of her surroundings.

As an artist dedicated to daily practice, the unpredictable winter weather and the constraints of lockdown during covid have drawn her creative practice closer to home. Lizzie collects flowers from her garden and from surrounding cliff walks and paths to create compositions at home.

With a collection of vintage china and bottles, ‘I enjoy choreographing nostalgic scenes that tell a story and allow the viewer to escape to a colourful world of flowers and edibles drenched in bright sunlight.’ The interplay of light reflecting from a nearby jug or the warmth of a shadow cast by a flower adds depth and intricacy to her work.

"I believe that everyone has a unique way of seeing the world, and this fascinates me. With confidence, we can translate what is in front of us onto the canvas and tell the viewer a little bit more about ourselves."

ABOUT THE ARTIST

What Sets Her Apart

As an accomplished artist deeply rooted in the traditions of still life and plein air painting, Lizzie Black lives and works in the picturesque coastal village of Mousehole, Cornwall. Drawing inspiration from her surroundings, she creates compositions that celebrate the beauty found in everyday moments.

Her work has been exhibited throughout the West Country and at prestigious venues such as the Mall Galleries in London, where she has shown with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI) for the past five years and the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA). In 2023, Lizzie was honored with the Tony Merrick Memorial Prize from the ROI for her outstanding work.

Coming from a family of artists, Lizzie’s training is both formal and personal—she learned foundational techniques from her father, the noted artist Bernard Evans. This blend of tradition and innovation is evident in her practice, which balances classical methods with her own unique voice. Lizzie’s influences include the Impressionist masters Vuillard and Sickert, whose focus on domestic life and evocative interiors inform her own vibrant and intimate paintings.

In addition to her art practice, Lizzie is a dedicated teacher who has nurtured students of all levels through in-person workshops, online courses, and one-on-one mentorship. Her structured yet intuitive teaching style reflects her belief that every artist has a unique way of seeing the world and that with the right guidance, they can bring their vision to life on canvas.

Lizzie’s ability to capture light, texture, and emotion in her work, combined with her approachable teaching style and deep connection to her craft, make her an extraordinary guide for this immersive week of painting at Château de Puy Vidal.

Built in 1267

A living part of history.

Château de Puy Vidal is a place where time loosens its grip. As you step through the Renaissance staircase and into the ancient rooms of the central wing, you are walking through eight centuries of history—stone walls that have held silence, art, conversation, and change. But this isn’t a museum. This is a living home, one that holds space for beauty, curiosity, and the creative spirit in all its forms.

Every corner tells a story: tapestries and candlelight in the salons, soft light pouring through antique glass, the echo of laughter from several rooms down the long corridors. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t demand your attention but earns it—slowly, reverently, with details that only reveal themselves when you’re truly present.

Puy Vidal is more than a backdrop for your retreat. It’s a companion in your process—a still and storied presence that grounds you, softens you, and gently calls you back to the joy of creating.

Led with Vision, Sustained by Love

This is our home.

Château de Puy Vidal is not a venue we operate—it is a living court we steward, inhabit, and tend. When you arrive here, you are not entering a retreat center, but crossing the threshold into a household shaped by care, beauty, and devotion to creative life.

We are your hosts- Julia and Caroline, partners in life and in vision, and the founders of The Lady of the Château. Together with our family—Julia’s parents, Maruca and Robert, and sister, Penelope- we live and work within the château, shaping a family-centered court where creativity, presence, and meaningful connection are held at the heart of everything we do.

Each retreat is crafted in collaboration with carefully selected guest instructors, chefs, and a small but devoted team—all chosen not only for their talent, but for their deep commitment to presence, generosity, and the art of creating together.

We believe in the transformative power of beauty—that when artists, dreamers, and seekers come together in a place that honors their voice, something shifts. We hope to spark a movement—of more art, more intention, and more creative community rippling outward through each person who passes through our doors.

We welcome those who feel the call.
