Oil Painting Workshop with Haidee-Jo Summers

Vibrant Impressions

June 24 - July 1, 2026

As June unfolds in France, the gardens burst with color, and days stretch long and light-filled. For her third year with us we are delighted to welcome internationally acclaimed artist and Vice President of the ROI Haidee-Jo Summers back to Puy Vidal for a week of oil painting like no other.

This workshop turns your eye away from grand vistas, instead guiding you to uncover the quiet, intimate scenes that charm and inspire—a sunlit doorway, flowers & ivy spilling over stone walls, or the glow of a historic interior. Haidee-Jo will help you connect with what delights you most, training your eye to notice, and your hand to capture, those fleeting moments of beauty.

Through plein air sessions in the château gardens and interiors rich with history, Haidee-Jo infuses her teaching with the same quiet joy that radiates from her own work. Gentle, encouraging, and insightful, she’ll support you in finding fresh approaches and renewed confidence in your painting.

Surrounded by fellow artists and the soft rhythms of country life, this week offers more than a workshop—it’s a restorative retreat. Each day blends structure with ease: hours of painting, moments of rest, and convivial evenings at the long château table, where candlelight, wine, and laughter carry the day to a close.

The 800-year-old Château de Puy Vidal is both your inspiration and your home during this week—an unforgettable setting where friendships blossom, creativity flourishes, and the spark of June stays with you long after you leave.

Artist's Letter

Haidee-Jo is a full-time professional artist based in Lincolnshire, England known for painting gardens, landscapes and seascapes 'en plein air'.

Her work is a celebration of light filled moments revealed in rich and vibrant oil paint using her personal visual language of fresh and direct brushmarks. Painting en plein air is central to her practice but she is equally at home working from a model, still life or interior.

She finds beauty in the ordinary, mundane and intimate rather than the grand vista. Coastal locations, domestic interiors and gardens and allotments provide her with rich and endless subject material.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

What Sets Her Apart

An internationally acclaimed artist, Haidee-Jo is the Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil painters (VPROI) and an elected member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA). Her work can be seen each year at the Mall Galleries in London in these prestigious society exhibitions.

As well as a busy painting life, Haidee-Jo is an author of two books on oil painting and an editorial consultant for The Artist magazine, alongside David Curtis ROI RSMA. Her first book, ‘Vibrant Oils’, published by Search Press, has been reprinted in Spanish, Italian, French and Chinese. Her second book 'Plein air painting in Oils' has been printed in English and Russian language editions. She has produced two popular DVDs with APV films which demonstrate her painting process en plein air.

Although oils are very much her preferred medium, in the 1990’s Haidee-Jo produced a large body of work for the Encyclopaedia of Watercolour Techniques and is an avid sketcher. In recent years she has been invited to judge UK and international plein air events, after winning many prizes for her work which features fresh and vibrant brushwork coupled with keen drawing and observational skills.

Haidee-Jo gained a degree in illustration following an art foundation course and graduated in 1994. She has been exhibiting and teaching ever since, in recent years having cut back on teaching commitments to focus on painting and writing. She believes very much in continuing to grow and develop, all the while striving to express her personal voice in paint and to do so more and more succinctly.

Built in 1267

A living part of history.

Château de Puy Vidal is a place where time loosens its grip. As you step through the Renaissance staircase and into the ancient rooms of the central wing, you are walking through eight centuries of history—stone walls that have held silence, art, conversation, and change. But this isn’t a museum. This is a living home, one that holds space for beauty, curiosity, and the creative spirit in all its forms.

Every corner tells a story: tapestries and candlelight in the salons, soft light pouring through antique glass, the echo of laughter from several rooms down the long corridors. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t demand your attention but earns it—slowly, reverently, with details that only reveal themselves when you’re truly present.

Puy Vidal is more than a backdrop for your retreat. It’s a companion in your process—a still and storied presence that grounds you, softens you, and gently calls you back to the joy of creating.

FAQ

Can I bring a non-painting partner?

Non-Painting Partners are most welcome to our workshops- we find they round out the groups and add a wonderful energy during the evenings after a long day of painting. There is plenty for them to do on the grounds - enjoying the pool, relaxing in the gardens, reading, going on countryside bikes or walks. We have Wifi, so working remotely at the Chateau is possible. If you'd like to bring a Non-Painting Partner to share your room with you they are welcome to join you in any of our double occupancy rooms. If they'd like to explore the region during the week, a car rental is recommended.

Led with Vision, Sustained by Love

We are your hosts—and it’s our joy to welcome you into the world we’re building here at Château de Puy Vidal.

Lady of the Château was co-founded and is led by Julia and Caroline, a couple and the creative force behind the brand. They are joined by Julia’s sister Penelope and their parents, Maruca and Robert, to create a family-centered space where creativity, personal growth, and meaningful connection are at the heart of everything they do.

Each retreat is crafted in collaboration with carefully selected guest instructors, chefs, and a small but devoted team—all chosen not only for their talent, but for their deep commitment to presence, generosity, and the art of creating together.

We believe in the transformative power of beauty—that when artists, dreamers, and seekers come together in a place that honors their voice, something shifts. We hope to spark a movement—of more art, more intention, and more creative community rippling outward through each person who passes through our doors.

We hope you’ll join us.
